J.D. Kimball

J.D. Kimball

John David Kimball was the original voice at the forefront of US Power Metal heroes Omen. He only sang on 3 albums and remained pretty much entirely absent from the music scene from 1987 until his tragic passing in 2003, but boy did he leave a mark on those classic Omen albums with his powerful baritone snarl. He spent about 90% of his singing in a raspy A3-A4 range as he told tales of over the top sword & sorcery, but he began to show a raspy head voice technique akin to Brian Johnson on the Nightmares EP. Given the strength of the few lows he recorded and the developing nature of his high range, he probably could've gone on to be quite a beast of a singer. Alas, it seems his calling was elsewhere, but he still left behind a legacy as one of 80s metal's most manly sounding singers.
